Leadership Through Learning
I had the honor of helping to create a special topic program for the AFRL Career STREAM program in partnership with the AFRL STEM Academy. The plan for the special topic we developed was to create a solid group of NMT students (undergraduate and/or graduate students) to guide through the creation of a curriculum focused on an impactful topic. We developed this program around the topic of image processing and machine learning applications. We put a notice out to students around New Mexico Tech, and had a handful of applications. I was responsible for interviewing students and forming the student team for the program.
Once we had a solid team collected for the special topics program, we launched the program with a kick-off event and began working on developing the curriculum. Over the months we worked on developing the content for our curriculum, I worked closely with the NMT team to help them develop their confidence and understanding of the fundamentals of image processing and machine learning. I walked the NMT team through the concepts used in digital image processing, filtering images using kernels, statistical analysis, regression models, classification models, and much more.
One of my passions is image processing, machine learning, and computer vision, so I thoroughly enjoyed being able to spend several months straight talking with peers about these topics. As we all progressed in our understanding of the content, we all continued to learn and grow in our confidence. Through several discussions with the NMT team I learned and understood different perspectives on the concepts we were working through. I was very happy to be able to further grow in my understanding of image processing and machine learning while also helping the rest of the NMT team in their skills and understanding of the concepts.
Thorough Planning
Another part of my role as the program coordinator for this program was to coordinate the creation of content and ensure a quality curriculum. To this end, I met weekly with sponsors and the AFRL STEM Academy staff to update on our progress and receive feedback for further work. We were given a set timeframe to finish the curriculum by, so I maintained a schedule of content creation and review periods for our four modules. I also made changes and assigned topics to the content developers to stay on track with our timeline.
I was in charge of reviewing the content for the curriculum before it was added to our website, which was created solely for housing our image processing and machine learning curriculum. I ensured that all content came from the same 'voice' in its manners of speech and checked the accuracy of the content. If changes were needed to the content, I worked closely with the developer to make the changes.
In module four of our curriculum, we wrote a case study which outlined and explained the process of developing and deploying an image processing and machine learning project. We discussed choosing parameters, building an image and video dataset, preprocessing the data, creating the models, training the models, evaluating the models, and deploying the models. I led the content developers in the creation of this case study, as I have experience with these applications. They were very excited to see all of the concepts they had been working with over the previous months be included in a real-world application! I was excited to share my passions with peers!
